35 mm
Fresh from the Knitty rejection pile! (It's okay Knitty, I still love you. Let's hang out sometime?)
35mm Hat
Growing up in Minnesota, I know the value of warm winter accessories. Unfortunately, I see so many people covering their heads with boring, machine-knit hats that I sometimes get the desire to make hats for people I hardly know. Since handing out new hats to my acquaintances might come across as strange, perhaps I’ll settle on giving them to my friends and family.
This hat was designed for my older brother, Colin. He has a strong interest in television and movies, so I thought a filmstrip image would suit his taste. Since the hat is double-knit, it not only provides two layers of warmth on cold, windy days, but it is reversible, too!

PATTERN NOTES
Construction Overview:
The number of stitches in the cast-on row is the stitch circumference of the outer layer of the hat. By knitting into the front and back of each stitch in the first knit row, the stitch count is doubled, which creates the inner layer of the hat. Both layers are knit simultaneously, with outer- and inner-layer stitches alternating around the needle. (Here’s a wonderful video that explains double knitting (scroll down).) Then, for each decrease, four stitches must be regarranged so that two outer stitches are next to each other, followed by two inner stitches.
Note: When double-knitting in stockinette stitch, you knit the outer-layer stitches and purl the inner layer stitches. However, both strands of yarn must travel together. That means, if you’re knitting with the MC, the CC needs to be at the back of the work with the MC, even though you’re not using the CC for that knit stitch. On the next stitch, when you purl with the CC, bring both strands to the front of the work, and purl with just the CC. (This is very important; it allows for the two layers to stay separate.)
Methods: To create the filmstrip, you will use these four color sequences.
Method 1 [solid MC outer row]: (k1 MC, p1 CC)
Method 2 [solid CC outer row]: (k1 CC, p1 MC)
Method 3 [alternating MC/CC outer row]: (k1 MC, p1 CC, k1 CC, p1 MC)
Method 4 [6 sts MC/2 sts CC outer row]: (k1 MC, p1 CC) 6x, (k1 CC, p1 MC) 2x
Dec 2 (decrease two): When rearranging stitches for decreases (which occur in pairs), it may be helpful to use a cable needle. Here’s how you should work each dec 2:
Sl 1 (MC) to right needle, sl 1 (CC) to cable needle, sl 1 st to right needle, return (CC) st on cable needle to left needle, return 2 (MC) sts on right needle to left needle. K2 tog MC, p2 tog CC.
PATTERN
Hat is worked from the bottom up. As you decrease for the crown, switch to dpns whenever you feel the circular needle becomes awkward to use.
Using MC and circular needle, CO 88 sts. Place marker and attach CC. The rest of the pattern is worked in the round.
Rnd 1: (K into front of st w/MC, k into back of st w/CC) around. 176 sts.
Rnds 2-6: Rep Method 1 around.
Rnd 7: Rep Method 2 around.
Rnds 8-9: Rep Method 3 around.
Rnd 10: Rep Method 2 around.
Rnds 11-17: Rep Method 4 around.
Rnd 18: Rep Method 2 around.
Rnds 19-20: Rep Method 3 around.
Rnd 21: Rep Method 1 around.
Rnd 22: K1 CC, p1 MC, rep Method 1 around.
Rnds 23-39: Rep Method 1 around.
At this point, the hat should measure approx 6 inches in length.
Begin dec for crown, cont in Method 1 for rest of hat:
Rnd 40: (Work 18 sts, dec 2) around. 160 sts.
Rnd 41 and future odd rows: work Method 1 around.
Rnd 42: (Work 16 sts, dec 2) around. 144 sts.
Rnd 44: (Work 14 sts, dec 2) around. 128 sts.
Rnd 46: (Work 12 sts, dec 2) around. 112 sts.
Rnd 48: (Work 10 sts, dec 2) around. 96 sts.
Rnd 50: (Work 8 sts, dec 2) around. 80 sts.
Rnd 52: (Work 6 sts, dec 2) around. 64 sts.
Rnd 54: (Work 4 sts, dec 2) around. 48 sts.
Rnd 56: (Work 2 sts, dec 2) around. 32 sts.
Rnd 58: (Dec 2) around. 16 sts.
Rnd 60: (Dec 2) around. 8 sts.
FINISHING
Cut MC and CC, leaving 6 inch tails. Using a tapestry needle, thread CC through rem 4 CC sts, weave in end on inside layer of hat. Then, use tapestry needle to thread MC tail through rem 4 MC sts, weave in end on outside layer of hat. Weave in the ends at the cast-on edge and put it on your (or someone else’s) head!

Cool hat!
Crabby-looking dad, though.
Poor you.
what a wonderful hat! i'll have to knit one up for my movie loving, chicago dwelling friend. i'm tempted to put something in one of the "frames".
A brilliant idea! I have to knit one for my husband. :) One of his hobbies is photography (and yes, about half of it is done on film, with quite unusual cameras).
Love that - great idea.
I love it, I can't believe they rejected that. You're in good company though (Stephanie Japel started with Knitty rejections).
The Dad probably doesn't like having his photo taken. Be nice to dads.
The dad was wearing the cool hat and a fleece jacket outside on a hot summer day trying to make it look wintry.
He also enjoys self-deprecating humor. ;-)
This totally should have made knitty. I can't wait to knit it.
Great hat. my husband is a film director and i have to make one tomorrow!
thanks---Patti Moreno

Hi, I love the hat. I am trying to knit it, and I have restarted about 5 times now. I am very confused about the first row after casting on. When I knit one (MC), purl one (CC), I still end up with 88 stitches after going around. How are you supposed to double the number of stitches? I have watched a demo video on double knitting several times, and it just tells me to do what I have already done. Can anyone help - I will look back here for postings.
Help!
Thanks,
Lj
Sorry that was confusing. What I mean is to do a whole row of Kfb increases, but knitting into each stitch with two different colors. Does that make sense?
Another way of saying it... for the first round, knit into the front of the stitch with the main color, but keep the old loop on the left needle (instead of sliding it off) and then knit into the back of the old loop with the contrast color.
So it's all knit stitches on the first row, and there's an increase in every cast on stitch.
Let me know if that helps!
(The videos are probably helpful in understanding how to work the rest of the hat, but I don't know if I did the cast on the same way they did.)
I think I got it now. At least it looks pretty good. Thanks for the help. :)
i'm a fan of double knitting, and this hat is just the basis i was looking for for making my own version. www.jessica-tromp.nl has great color charts, and i'm going to incorporate one of those into the hat instead of the (totally awesome) 35mm film pattern. super cool.
I'm trying to make this hat for my boyfriend but I just can't seem to get it right. I've read the 3rd and 4th step of the pattern and just don't understand what I'm supposed to do. Please help.
Shelley-
Is it a specific row of the pattern that you're confused about? Is it one of the methods (color patterns)? I'm not sure what you mean by steps three and four.
If it's the methods you're talking about, 3 and 4 just show how to make the color combinations work with the correct color on each side. Method three alternates MC and CC on the front. Each pair of stitches creates two layers of one stitch. The first stitch in the pair is knit in whatever color you need to show up on the outer layer, and the second stitch (inner layer) is purled with whatever color the first stitch isn't. (Making sure you bring both colors to the front for each of your purls and both colors to the back for each of your knits.) The fourth method works the same pair of stitches six times, and then the opposite pair twice, which creates the 6 MC 2 CC pattern on the outer layer.
Is this helpful, or am I completely not understanding what's confusing?
I've been looking so long for the perfect hat...
This is really cute.
So wearable.
Just me!
I stumbled across your hat pattern and love it, I'm trying to knit it for my brother. I read the comments and I still don't get the instructions for methods 3 and 4. If each stitch is alternating MC, and CC how can I knit method 3 k1 MC, p1 CC, k1 CC, p1 MC? Same with method 4. The colors on the needles should be alternating, right? I'm still new at the double knitting thing so perhaps the directions are clearer to a more experienced knitter. Thanks.
Sarah
Sorry about the confusion, Sarah. What I mean by alternating is that they alternate in pairs. In order for the design to be reversible, the two layers are done in opposite colors. So the first stitch is MC, which means the second is CC. Those two work as an alternating pair. So basically, there's two pairs you could have: either 1st st - MC 2nd CC, or 1st CC - 2nd MC. Each pair has to include a MC and a CC, but sometimes placing different pairs together (to make the image) ends up setting 2 MCs or 2 CCs (each from a different pair) next to each other.
Does that make any sense?
Okay well I just finished a different double knit hat pattern in hopes that it will make this one easier but I'm still not getting the method 3 and 4. On method 3 do you slip the stitches to get the two CC colors next to each other? Somewhat similar to how you would decrease?? Sorry I'm new to double knitting and just can't grasp this concept. This is the perfect hat for my boyfriend who works in the film industry so I'm trying to understand it so I can knit it for him for Christmas. Thanks, Shelly
I finally understand the pattern for anyone that doesn't it might be that you like me are used to patterns that are supposed to follow colors. The last hat pattern I knit was double knit and you essentially just followed the color from the previous row. This one ignores the color on the previous row, thus I'm trying to make it more complicated then it really is. One thing though is if the pattern goes Method 2,3,2, and 4 is the middle should it not reverse to 2,3,2 but the pattern states 2,3,1??? Shelly
Sorry about that mistake, Shelly. Row 21 should probably read method 2. Go with whatever method makes the patterning vertically symmetrical. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow and fix it. Thanks for noticing that!
In regards to the last comment/error, I would advise you to edit the original. I got to this point and I was wondering the same thing myself. For anyone who came from the Ravelry page, they might not look at the comments to find the solution. It would help for those who don't know that there are comments at the bottom. Just a suggestion!
Otherwise, this hat is adorable! I knitted it on size 7 needles because from the other examples it looked too bulky. I used 80%acrylic and 20%wool yarn and it's much smoother than a traditional wool.
Great design! It's going to be a great gift for my soon to be brother-in-law who is in the film industry.
My son is having an 8th birthday party at the movie theater and this would SO be perfect for him...but he's a yarn snob, cotton or alpaca only. I don't know how to do double knitting :-( but I faved this on rav because eventually, I'll learn and this hat is super cute!!
TVM for sharing <3
Oh my gosh - ty so much. I have been searching everywhere for exactly how to start a darn double knit hat - but eveything seems to just go right into the pattern and explain how to knit the front and purl the back. How to make it the right circumference to start though?! You have made my night - and great hat!
it`s very good idea! & cool present for movie-making people!
thanks i have been searching for a pattern with double knitting decrease instructions for the longest this is my first dk hat....thanks you explained thing very well....
Hi. I am making this hat for my film-fan daughter. She attends colllege in a cold place. will send photos when I am done. Thank you for sharing the pattern w the world.
Help! why is row 21 a main color round (method 1)? shouldn't it be a cc round (method 2)?
Hi. I enjoyed knitting the hat, and then shipped it off to my photo-fanatic daughter at college. I was lazy, however, and split the hats to two layers around row 30. Then I could finish the two layers separately much faster than I could knit the two layers simultaneously. My daughter loves the hat. She received it at college yesterday. You may see a picture here: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Z944jxt4VlJQYtb6g_9IZJD5eZWvlJ0MrrRmD_kjvuQ?feat=directlink
Thanks for sharing the pattern with the world, even if Knitty didn't accept it. It was fun to knit.
So sad that knitty rejected it! More fools they!
This will go into my To-Do - hopefully for a friend who is in theater ala Broadway and National Tours and will also do film.
